Chapter 2: The C Gene: Community  > Up- and Down-Regulating

Up- and Down-Regulating

We can’t completely discard competition and exclusion. It’s built into our DNA as part of our survival mechanisms. What we can do, however, is express WE leadership DNA by minimizing those things in our environment that trigger fear of rejection, and maximizing those things in our environment that enable all to feel included, valued, and appreciated.

When leaders lead from a top-down mindset, they put into place controls and “regulations” that actually impede the growth of a vibrant, nourishing culture. Throughout The DNA of Leadership we will refer to a concept called “regulating.” This concept is similar to the way we regulate hot and cold water to get the right temperature. When it’s too hot we can down-regulate the heat and up-regulate the cold. In the same way, leaders need to learn to down-regulate the impact of fear in the workplace, and up-regulate the sense of support and community. As leaders become more sensitive to the dynamics at play, they will be in the position to create an inspiring and life-releasing culture, one that enables the emergence of its own unique Leadership DNA.
