B ARRIERS TO O PEN C OMMUNICATION We always have some fun with this one. It's a brainstorming activity. So, it has the double benefit of teaching people the value of brainstorming as a tool and learning the self-imposed barriers to open communication. It is also fun. Process: Begin by reminding the team about the rules of brain- storming, such as "quantity of ideas is the goal," "no evaluation of any ideas," and "hitchhiking (adding on) to other ideas is encouraged." Print in large block letters on a flipchart, whiteboard, or computer screen, "Phrases that Block Open Communica- tion."
