Part IV: Envisioning the Future > Design and Designability

Chapter 35. Design and Designability[*]

[*] Rikard Stankiewicz, Lund University.

Rikard Stankiewicz

THE FOLLOWING discussion of designability is based on my research on the relationship between the evolving structure of technical knowledge and the innovation and problem-solving processes in technology (Stankiewicz, 2000; 2002). These processes vary greatly across different fields of technology and over time. Much of that variation can be reduced to a single dimension formed by two polar types: the design-driven technologies, on the one hand, and the discovery-driven ones, on the other. Software development comes close to the first pole, while drug development best approximates the second. Most technologies, however, fall somewhere in between. Designability is a variable.
