Chapter 5. Leading and Coaching Your Tea... > The Three Principal Motivators Are F...

5.2. The Three Principal Motivators Are Fear, Greed, and Commitment

An interesting aspect of motivating developers and other creative people concerns technical challenge. New and inexperienced developers are often reluctant to take on unfamiliar challenges. They lack the self-confidence and job security required to take the risk. More experienced developers, however, are often excited by new technical challenges and are eager to learn new methods and techniques. On the other hand, the same experienced developers will likely feel that repeated assignments of similar work are not interesting or motivating.

Some tasks are motivating because of working conditions. Developers will gladly join one team while a similar assignment on another team will offer little or no attraction. Motivation is a complex mix of talents, experiences, preferences, and attitudes, and what will motivate one developer at one time may not be motivating to the same developer at a different time or under different conditions.
