Training and Development

Training and development interventions can be used to improve the technical skills or coping skills of individuals or teams, thereby improving their ability to cope with the work.

Returning to our definition of stress, stress can be defined as ‘the adverse reaction people have to excessive pressures or other types of demand’ (HSE, 2005). Training and development can help people manage the pressures on them in one of two ways:

  • Technical skills training: improving their ability to do the core tasks of the job, therefore reducing the effort required to do the job with the aim of reducing the stress placed on the employee.
  • Stress management skills training: improving their ability to cope with the demands placed on them by giving them tools and techniques to cope with the pressure.
