Knowledge Jam can be a highly effective addition to a KM program because it can achieve results relatively quickly, the technology investment is low, and it is intentionally directed at mission-critical knowledge. Currently, many KM programs are positioned to focus on content or document volume, collaboration and search tools, and purchased subscriptions. They are not positioned to go after tacit knowledge.
Knowledge Jam raises the caliber of KM’ers and raises the perception of relevancy for KM. For example, at a financial services company, the Knowledge Jam team stepped in to help accelerate the transfer of knowledge during a high-profile office closure and operations transfer. The team was positioned squarely as a change resource for solving the immediate challenge of business continuity. It also engaged multiple divisions. Before that point, the KM program was known within one division.
