How do I deal with pessimistic team members who are engaged in spreading rumors and negativity?

This is a practical problem. Project managers face it many times during their careers. How you address this problem depends on whether the team member is upset about present circumstances or is terminally pessimistic:

  • The team member spreading negativity and rumors is upset about something within the project or company. This attitude may be temporary. You may be able to get the team member on track again if you listen carefully to her grievance, understand what she is upset about, and address the problem satisfactorily. But you must find the root cause. For example, the team member might be unhappy about how the project team is treating or utilizing her. She might be a recognized achiever on other projects, but here she might be working on a trivial task, making her feel like no one appreciates her talent or simply that what she is doing currently is not the best use of her skills. (In IT, this often happens on maintenance and support projects.) Consequently, she might be looking for a change in project or even a change in job. She might even be close to....
