Seizures are episodes of abnormal motor, sensory, or autonomic activity that result from the excessive discharge of electrical impulses from cerebral neurons. All seizures affect the level of consciousness; however, the degree is dependent on the type of seizure. Most seizures occur without a cause. Any abnormality in the central nervous system (CNS) can cause seizure activity.
Note
When a person has recurring unprovoked seizures, she is said to have epilepsy.
