The inherent complexity and foreignness of virtual environments requires an extraordinary focus on preliminary planning. In this segment, we present techniques with which to become familiar with (a) client features and in-world culture, (b) available sources of literature and collaboration, (c) relevant in-world Groups and events, and (d) legal and institutional regulations.
A cursory knowledge of client technology and in-world society, although common to most interested in utilizing Second Life for health purposes (programs), is far from what is needed to develop an effective in-world presence. Program designers should move beyond interface familiarity and examine the capabilities, terminology, and cultural norms of the SL Viewer, in-world economy, and content generation. All of these factors profoundly influence program interactivity, target audience, budget, and scope.
