Chapter 7. Unity in Diversity

Chapter 7. Unity in Diversity

Scientific and technological convergence could have the paradoxical effect of creating a unified world technical culture on which a great diversity of subcultures could be built. How might a new generation of social sciences (based on convergence with cognitive and information sciences) manage conflict in a world of diversity? Or will the world enter the future in ignorance of its meaning and incapable of responding to its challenges? This chapter draws on the ideas of critics of technology, ordinary citizens, social scientists, and those involved in the converging technologies movement. The fundamental but unanswerable question posed here is whether the convergence of all sciences and technologies could support the convergence of all human societies, or lay the groundwork for unity in diversity.
