We need to feel that we are valued and our needs are accepted. We have unresolved issues with someone when we feel they operated out of self-interest, without regard for us. And we are unresolved with someone when we feel they owe us an apology for what they did to us, or by validating our experience by acknowledging what they did. David was Nick!s older brother. David was always physically bigger than Nick. When they were younger, David would bully Nick and embarrass him in front of other kids. David resented that Nick got favored treatment from their father because Nick was more athletic. Their father would praise Nick!s athletic accomplishments and, from David!s perspective, ignore David!s aca- demic successes. In addition, Nick got out of doing some of the chores around their small farm because he had athletic practice after school. The two brothers did not have much interaction with each other as adults. Each moved to different parts of the country and were generally cordial with each other on the few occasions when the family got together. Nick and David were both in their thirties when their father died, leaving his property and oth- er assets to be divided between the two sons. Immediately, the brothers got in- to a bitter dispute about how to divide up their father!s furniture and personal belongings and what to do with the real estate. In the course of a heated argument, Nick accused David of still being a
