How Do You React to Conflicts?

Joe called his assistant, Lisa, into his office to discuss the report she submitted recently. With the report in front of him, Joe started going through it, page by page, pointing out the errors in the data. He criticized the logic of Lisa’s conclusions, and even attacked the graphics on the report’s cover.

At first, Lisa listened, nodding each time Joe made a point She took notes for awhile, but then stopped as Joe went on and on. Lisa could not hear anything clearly anymore, because inside she was thinking about how hard she had worked on this re port. She silently wondered why Joe was being so critical. Occasionally she tried to defend her report, but Joe quickly interrupted her and went on.

When Joe was done, he closed the re port, leaned back in his chair, looked up, and saw Lisa’s reactions. Her jaw was firmly set. She did not maintain any eye contact and was blinking her eyes as if she was about to cry.
