Appendix D. Exporting a Windows 2000 Private Key

1.
Start the Microsoft Management Console (Start | Run | MMC).

Click Console.

3.
Click Add/Remove Snap-in as shown in the following graphic:

Click the Add button in the Add/Remove Snap-in window.

5.
Select Certificates, as shown in the following Add standalone Snap-in window.

6.
Select the My user account radio button as shown in the Certificates Snap-in window.

7.
Click Close on Add Snap-in.

8.
Click OK on Add/Remove Snap-in.

9.
Drop down to Personal/Certificates.

10.
Right-click the user’s certificate.

11.
Click All Tasks | Export as shown in the following graphic:

When the Export Wizard is displayed, click the Next button.

13.
Select the Yes, export the private key radio button as shown in the following graphic:

14.
Make sure the Personal Information Exchange radio button is selected. (Do not select the Delete the private key checkbox.)

15.
Enter a password to protect the key.

16.
Select a path for the key.

17.
Verify the settings you specified.

18.
Click Finish to export the key.
