Available Mechanisms

The following sections provide an overview of the currently available integration mechanisms, sorted by category. Some of these mechanisms continue to be refined by the engineering community, but most of them have already been used in many production deployments worldwide.

Dual-Stack

Dual-stack is nothing new. If you were a Novell NetWare shop, you ran IPX (internetwork packet exchange) along with IPv4 on the same interface; or if you have Macs, you are running AppleTalk along with IPv4. In this dual-stack approach, we are running two versions of IP on the same interface.

Note

When we talk about dual-stack, we talk about using IPv6 natively (no use of transition mechanisms such as tunneling or translation). In the dual-stack approach we use native IPv6 together with IPv4. If we run a network which doesn’t need IPv4 anymore, we call it an IPv6-only network.
