Planning a Pilot

When introducing a new technology such as IPv6, which is responsible for the underlying connectivity for enterprise applications, it is wise to start a pilot/trial in a lab environment. Testing in a lab environment that mirrors the actual network can help you better understand IPv6 and gain confidence in its potential success in the enterprise network. On successful completion of lab tests, a pilot implementation on a live network should be performed. This pilot can be a small section of the live network.

The following sections provide a high-level overview of some of the activities included an IPv6 pilot. After the pilot is complete, these activities can be revised for a large-scale deployment/migration. An extensive pilot-case study is discussed in Chapter 12, “Walk Before Running: Building an IPv6 Lab and Starting a Pilot.”
