Part I: Addressing and Packet Flow Infra... > Windows Firewall with Advanced Secur...

Chapter 4. Windows Firewall with Advanced Security

Windows Firewall in the Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista operating systems provides both packet filtering and IP Security (IPsec) capabilities. Combined, these features can greatly reduce network security risks including the risk that malicious attackers connecting from the Internet or internal networks will gain access to internal resources.

The default security settings allow most network applications to have full connectivity. Through careful planning, you can tighten this security so that only computers on specific networks, domain member users and computers, or computers you have issued a certificate to can connect to network resources.

This chapter provides information about how to design, deploy, maintain, and troubleshoot the Windows Firewall component in Windows Server 2008. This chapter assumes that you have a solid understanding of Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
