Every book is a collaborative effort, and on this one we had the very able assistance of many friends and colleagues, for which we’re grateful.

The production schedule for this book turned out to be a rollercoaster ride, with some really fast parts, some excruciatingly slow sections (while we waited as plans for Microsoft security products changed repeatedly), and lots of unexpected twists and turns. Throughout it all, Joan Preppernau and her crew at Online Training Solutions, Inc. did an incredible job of keeping everything on track. It takes a lot of skill to perform copy editing, technical editing, illustration, page layout, proofreading, and indexing even on a normal schedule, but Joan, Susie Bayers, Jan Bednarczuk, R.J. Cadranell, Liz Clark, Jaime Odell, and Lisa Van Every did an outstanding job in difficult circumstances.

Our friends at Microsoft Press, Juliana Aldous and Sandra Haynes, made sure that we had everything we needed and provided the ideas and support that we’ve come to expect—and greatly appreciate. It was also through their efforts that this entire book was reviewed for accuracy and consistency by the folks at Microsoft who know the products inside out, members of the Security Content Review Board. Rich Benack, Kimmo Bergius, Heiko Böhm, Barbara Chung, Coleman Craig, Duane Crider, Fidelis Ekezue, Eric Fitzgerald, Doug Neal, Steve Patrick, Shawn Rabourn, David Ross, George Spanakis, and Brad Warrender each reviewed one or more chapters in their area of expertise. Kai Axford reviewed the entire book and, like the others, provided many useful suggestions for improvement. Their input was invaluable, but we made the final decisions on every word that went into this book—if you see a mistake, blame us, not them!

Others at Microsoft who generously answered questions and provided much-needed information include Brendan Foley, Rob Franco, Jason Joyce, Sterling Roeser, and Aaron Margosis.

Our agent, Claudette Moore of Moore Literary Agency, helped to conceive the book, asked for the moon, and managed to keep everyone happy, as she so ably does.

Lori Paxton of DigitalPersona, Inc. provided a fingerprint reader for evaluation and, more important, provided answers to our questions about biometric logon devices.

This book incorporates some material that was originally written by Craig Stinson and Dave Methvin for Microsoft Windows Security Inside Out for Windows XP and Windows 2000.

Our sincere thanks to all.
