Chapter 5. RSVP-TE Protocol > RSVP and RSVP-TE

5.1. RSVP and RSVP-TE

Unlike OSPF or BGP, the Resource Reservation Protocol (RSVP) is not a routing protocol. It is a protocol used between routers to signal resource reservations. It was originally designed as a signaling protocol used by network elements to exchange resource information to help implement QoS solutions.

An IP host may use RSVP to negotiate resource requirements with routers for particular applications. Routers may use RSVP to exchange QoS requirements to set up sessions and implement Connection Admission Control (CAC) prior to the transmission of the data stream.
