Chapter 8. Preventing Problems

Chapter 8. Preventing Problems

To prevent network problems, you must be proactive instead of reactive, which requires you to be not only prepared but alert to changes. Network emergencies happen—the question is whether you are prepared to handle them. These emergencies range from a failed server NIC to a fire or other disaster. Disaster planning is necessary, but routine problems, rather than disasters, are the topic of this section.

Standards-based approaches to planning, installing, and maintaining a network may be found in several places, including ISO 20000 and the Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL). ITIL originated in the United Kingdom’s Office of Government Commerce (OGC) and predated ISO 20000.
