Final Steps

The final step to configuring your Nessus server is to make any modifications required to the server configuration. In the UNIX environments, this file is located in /opt/nessus/etc/nessus/nessusd.conf. Mac OS X has this file located in /Library/Nessus/<arch>/etc/nessus/nessusd.conf. Windows has moved away from this model slightly and uses all options passed from the client to affect scan options. Note any options passed from the client at scan time will supersede the server configuration. To modify this file, view it using your favorite text editor. For example:

vi /opt/nessus/etc/nessus/nessud.conf

Several different items can be tweaked in this configuration file; however, we are only going to focus on a few. The first item specifies how much Nessus can impact the network during scans. This item is max_hosts, which controls how many total simultaneous hosts Nessus will run tests at once. The second item is max_checks, which limits the number of simultaneous checks are against each host.
