Chapter 24. Backups and Disaster Recovery > Backup and Restore Permissions

Backup and Restore Permissions

Windows 2000 has a special built-in group for performing system backups. This group, Back up Operators, has the Backup Files and Directories user permission. This permission allows a user to back up and restore all files on a system, regardless of the file permissions. Normally, users can copy only files they own or can read and restore to those directories where they have Write permissions.

Note

By default, the Backup Operators group is empty, although administrators also have the Backup Files and Directories user permission.
