Every system administrator knows the importance of keeping good backups to keep from losing data, but, in the context of security, backups are even more significant. Disasters can take many forms, and certainly not all disasters are natural. Getting paged at 3 a.m. because your company's Web server has been defaced is undoubtedly considered a disaster. When that happens, the first place you might turn are to your system backups. These backups not only allow you to restore your system to its original state, they can also provide evidence of what has changed.
