Chapter 10. Wireless Services

This chapter sorts out the various wireless options, which are described in Table 10.1. These services include paging, digital cellular, personal communications services (PCS), low earth-orbiting satellites, mobile data communications, specialized mobile radio and third-generation technologies for high-speed Internet access. Some of these technologies, such as paging, have been available for more than ten years. Others, such as low earth orbiting-satellites, are new or still in development.

Analog cellular services, also known as advanced mobile phone service (AMPS), were widely deployed by the late 1980s. They were implemented in a standard format so that all telephones worked on all analog cellular networks in the U.S.
