Future Trends

Among the several classes of distributed differential codes till date, the 4-group decodable codes from ECA are shown to outperform all other codes both in error performance as well as in encoding and decoding complexity. Several possible directions for future work are as follows:

  • • An interesting direction for future work is to design single-symbol decodable differential codes (if they exist) for networks with any number of relays. This will further reduce both the encoding and decoding complexity. Deriving an upper bound on the maximum rate of such codes is also challenging.

  • • It is reported in the Section, Extending the differential STBC construction to fully non-coherent relay channels, that the error performance of the differential codes is the same when either the receiver uses only the knowledge of channels from relays to destination or when it doesn’t use any channel knowledge. Investigations on why the knowledge of a subset of channels doesn’t give benefit in the error performance compared to fully non-coherent scenario can be made.
