Finding Optimal Solutions with Solver

GoalSeek is a great tool for finding out how much you need to change a single input to generate a desired result from a formula, but it’s of no help if you want to find the best mix of several inputs. For example, Catherine Turner might want to advertise in four regional magazines to drive customers to The Garden Company’s Web site, but she might not know the best mix of ads to place among the publications. She asked the publishers for ad pricing and readership numbers, which are reflected in the spreadsheet shown below, along with the minimum number of ads per publication (three) and the minimum number of times she would like the ad to be seen (100,000). Because Catherine is a contributing editor to the fourth magazine, she does want to take out at least four ads in that publication despite its relatively low readership. The goal of the ad campaign is for your ads to be seen as many times as possible without spending more than your $30,000 budget.
