Part III: Excel the Easy Way

Part III: Excel the Easy Way

If you thought number-crunching was boring, think again. The features, new and old, in Microsoft Excel 2002 allow you to do things with data you never could have done with a calculator and an accountant’s pad. Create a simple spreadsheet? Sure, but then you can publish it on the Web in such a way that it provides an interactive worksheet for Web visitors to use. Enter data easily and then plug in stock quotes by using smart tags. Generate professional-looking reports, charts, and forms with a few simple clicks and rely on wizard technology to lead you through the process.

In this part of the book, you’ll look at the most common tasks you’ll need in order to get up to speed quickly with Excel 2002. Chapter 8, “Creating and Saving a Spreadsheet,” shows you around the Excel window and walks you through starting a new spreadsheet, entering data, adding simple functions, and saving the worksheet.

Once you create a spreadsheet, you can work on improving, enhancing, and printing it in Chapter 9, “Editing, Formatting, and Printing Spreadsheets.” In this chapter, you’ll learn to make simple data changes, work with ranges, insert and delete rows, change the appearance of text, borders, and backgrounds, and change data format and alignment. When you get to Chapter 10, “Charting Spreadsheet Data,” you’ll be ready to create charts that illustrate the trends you see in your spreadsheet data. Excel includes 14 standard chart types—and a virtually unlimited number of custom chart types that you can create yourself.
