30.5. Understanding Popular Options

The most popular options appear in three groups on the Popular tab of the Excel Options dialog box: Top Options for Working with Excel, When Creating New Workbooks, and Personalize Your Copy of Microsoft Office. This section provides some details about the options in each group. To view and change these options, see the section, "Change Popular Options."

Top Options for Working with Excel

OptionDescription
Show Mini Toolbar on SelectionUse this option to control whether the Mini Toolbar appears whenever you select text. The Mini Toolbar contains formatting options that alsoappear on the Home tab.
Enable Live PreviewUse this option to control whether Excel uses the Live Preview feature to show you how information will appear before you apply settings.
Show Developer Tab in the RibbonUse this option to control whether the Developer tab appears in the Ribbon. When displayed, this tab contains tools that you can use when working with macros, form development, or XML file formats.
Color SchemeUse this list box to select one of three color schemes: Blue (the default), Silver, or Black.
ScreenTip StyleUse this list box to control the behavior of ScreenTips. ScreenTips display brief descriptions about the purpose of buttons on the Ribbon or the Quick Access Toolbar when you hover the mouse pointer over the button.
Edit Custom ListsClick this button to create additional custom lists to use when AutoFilling cells. Lists exist for the days of the week and the months of the year.


When Creating New Workbooks

OptionDescription
Use This FontUse this list box to select the font you want Excel to use for all new workbooks. The default, Body Font, corresponds to Calibri.
Font SizeUse this list box to select a size, in points, for the font in all new workbooks. The default size is 11 points.
Default View for New SheetsUse this list box to set the default view for new workbooks; the default view is Normal View, but you can also choose Page Break Preview or Page Layout View
Include This Many SheetsIn this field, type the number of sheets you want Excel to include in each new workbook.


Personalize Your Copy of Microsoft Office

OptionDescription
User NameIn this field, you can enter the name you want Excel to assign as the author of new workbooks.
Language SettingsClick this button to open the Microsoft Office Language Settings 2007 dialog box. From this dialog box, you can enable various foreign languages and set the default editing language.
