When you’re working in Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, you can save your file to
your SkyDrive instead of saving it to a folder on your computer. Use the menu command,
File→Share→Save to SkyDrive. You might think that means you must share the file
if it’s on SkyDrive, but that’s not the case. At first, there are two folders on
Sky-Drive—My Documents and Public. Save files that you don’t want to share in
your My Documents folder. As shown in Figure D-3, you can create
additional folders in SkyDrive and dictate who has access to those
folders.
UP TO SPEED: Living with Live.com Ads
Microsoft provides gigabytes of free storage and web apps, but there’s
still a price to be paid. On Live.com, that price is advertising (over there
on the right side of the SkyDrive pages). You can try to ignore the ads or, if you’re
inclined, you can manage them a bit using the three links that surround each
ad:
To remove an ad, click the X button
in the lower-right corner. That ad will disappear, but the relief is
temporary. When you move to another page, or refresh the current
page, a new ad takes its place. They’ve got millions of 'em.
To send Microsoft a message about a
particular ad, click the Ad Feedback link, also in the
lower-right corner. They’re interested to find out whether you find
a particular ad offensive, or you don’t trust the advertiser, or the
ad feed doesn’t seem to be working.
To personalize the ads displayed for
you, click the Ad Choices link in the upper-right
corner. As with most websites, particularly those that include
search tools, Microsoft collects information about you as you search
and surf the web. It uses that information to serve up ads likely to
interest you. If you find that just a bit creepy, under “Ad
choices”, you can “opt out” of personalized ads. You’ll still get
ads, but they won’t be tailored specifically for you. If you want to
go the other direction, you can give Microsoft more information
about your interests, and get even more tempting
advertising.
