8.7. Memory Leak

Let's look at one more way to use svmon. Memory leaks can be a big problem on a system. A memory leak is any program or process that keeps on allocating more memory and does not release it. This situation can cause real memory to be used up extremely quickly and, in a worst-case scenario, can even precipitate a system crash by causing the system to run out of paging space. I'm not ashamed to admit that this has happened to me. In fact, before I knew about svmon, I saw it happening before my eyes and couldn't stop it because I wasn't certain what was causing it!

To identify the cause of memory leaks, you first need to identify the processes that are using up the most memory. Here is one way to do this:
