Cannibalizing

Often, older devices are “cannibalized” for parts. These devices are harvested for the parts themselves, not for a system-to-system replacement. This often presents a challenge when the overall installed base has the need for parts for older devices but when the funding organization might not be IT.

Cannibalizing older devices ensures that the remaining configuration has little or no value. It is not unusual for these devices to have a cost associated with disposal.
