10. Migrating Windows Applications to Linux

The list of reasons to use the Linux desktop includes choice in vendors, progressive software licensing policies, and flexibility of the overall architecture. The biggest detractor from Linux on the desktop other than hardware vendor support is arguably application availability. Applications that may be hard to find are those that fall outside the realm of core applications mentioned in earlier chapters, which included browsers, email clients, and office suites. The “gotcha” with desktop Linux applications is that there may be no functional equivalent to your Windows applications. There are three common solutions to this problem:
