Chapter 7. Contact Management with the Personal and Public Directories

Lotus Notes and the Domino Server are designed to run in a networked environment where everyone uses Notes or a Web browser. Businesses implement Notes as a communication tool within their organization, but many also use Notes as an indispensable tool for communicating with contacts outside the organization, as well. To stay in contact with a number of people, you might find that you need a contact manager—software that helps you keep track of your contacts.

There are some very good contact management applications that can be purchased. Many of these even run in a Lotus Notes environment. But before looking at a dedicated contact management system, you might want to look at what you already have on your desktop. The Notes Personal Directory and the Domino Public Directory include many of the contact management functions included in dedicated packages. You might find that the built-in functions are perfectly adequate for your needs.
