In Posix terminology, a “shell” is an interactive command-line and scripting environment, analogous to the Command Interpreter. Many of the features of the Posix shell have direct counterparts in the CI, although the implementations are quite different. If you are comfortable with any of the various shells found on UNIX platforms, you will feel right at home in Shell/iX.
Time and space will not permit me to provide exhaustive coverage on Shell/iX in this book, and there are numerous excellent tutorials and references to help you get the most out of the shell. However, I will try to give a basic overview with particular attention to those features of Shell/iX that are unique to MPE, or particularly useful in the MPE environment.
