Chapter 1. Performance Management with Operations Navigator

Chapter 1. Performance Management with Operations Navigator

In many environments the system has been properly “sized” for the amount of work it must do — the number of active users, complexity of application, number of records to be processed, and so forth. This means the hardware resources (processor, memory, disk, capacity, and speed) required are sufficient to give good performance in normal operation and peak workload time periods. In those situations, life is simple and there is little need to do performance management.

In many other environments, new applications, an increase in the number of new application users, or more data to process become reasons to monitor the performance metrics of the system or systems being used to run the applications. In those environments a “performance management discipline” should be applied that minimizes unacceptable interactive response time or unacceptably long job or query run times.
