3.1. Installing the Operating System and Applications

To install Linux, attach any optional devices you plan to use, such as a PCMCIA network card or external floppy drive, to your PC. Then, follow this simple step-by-step procedure:

  1. Start the installation.

  2. Select installation options.

  3. Create partitions.

  4. Configure the boot loader.

  5. Configure networking.

  6. Configure language support.

  7. Configure the system time.

  8. Set the root password.

  9. Select packages.

  10. Install packages.

  11. Configure X (Red Hat Enterprise Linux only).

  12. Complete the video configuration (Red Hat Enterprise Linux only).

  13. Create boot diskette (Fedora Core only)
