17.5. Summary

  • RADIUS is used to enable wireless base station users to authenticate and gain access to wireless networks by using their directory services user account and password (WPA2-Enterprise) rather than using a simple shared network password to manage network access on the base station itself (WPA2-Personal).

  • Snow Leopard Server's WPA2-Enterprise implementation uses an 802.1X configuration that specifies EAP-TTLS authentication.

  • The EAP-TTLS encryption RADIUS uses requires a certificate, either obtained from a commercial Certificate Authority or generated by Certificate Assistant within Snow Leopard Server.

  • Once configured for AirPort base stations, RADIUS can also be used to authenticate VPN users or other Network Access Server devices supporting 802.1X security.
