Chapter 3. Deploying with Installation Packages

Chapter 3. Deploying with Installation Packages

Chapter FilesDeployment Planning Template.pdf, available at http://www.peachpit.com/acsa.deployment
TimeThis chapter takes approximately 4 hours to complete.
GoalsExplore Mac OS X installation package technology
Create installation packages to deploy complex items
Create installation packages with scripts to further automate deployment processes
Deploy installation packages to local and remote computers
Troubleshoot the Mac OS X installation system

The techniques for deploying individual items are inadequate for deploying some of the more complex software available today. When your deployment needs require distribution of complex collections of items or greater installation control and automation options, then you should consider taking advantage of the built-in Mac OS X installation technology. The same technology that’s used to install Mac OS X and other Mac software can be used to distribute any items needed for your deployment. Further, as you’ll see in the next chapter, the Mac OS X installation technology plays an integral part in deployment of entire systems.
