Managing Computers

Another type of object in Active Directory is the computer object. Computer objects are used to represent domain controllers, member servers, and workstations. Computers authenticate to the domain by using the computer object just as users authenticate to the domain by using user objects. Computer accounts automatically change their password every 30 days as a background process.

Note

Note

All computers running Windows NT, Windows 2000, Microsoft Windows XP Professional, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, and Windows Server 2008 must have a computer account in the domain. Computers running Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows 98 cannot have accounts in the domain.

You will rarely manage the computer objects in Active Directory directly. If you right-click a computer account in Active Directory, you will see that there are very few management options. One option available is to reset the computer account. Use this option with caution, because when you reset a computer account, you break that computer’s connection to the domain, and the computer must then be rejoined to the domain. Verify that the computer account is not disabled before resetting the computer account. When a computer account is disabled, the computer will not be able to log on to the domain.
