Chapter 11. Performance Enhancements

Chapter 11. Performance Enhancements

Windows Servers are widely deployed in some very large systems worldwide, and this is an area of technology that Microsoft pays particular attention to. In this chapter you will learn about systems for achieving reliability and high levels of accessibility. Among the topics covered in this chapter is the Windows System Resource Manager (WSRM), which lets you set a policy for how a server's resources are allocated.

Technologies allow enterprises to both scale out their systems as well as scale up. In scale-out deployments, more servers are added to improve the ability of the group of servers to manage the load. Network load balancing is a technology that helps manage scale out, and is particularly important in areas such as websites and telecommunications where the processes are I/O bound. In scale-up deployment, fewer and more powerful servers are added to improve capacity. Microsoft Cluster Server is an example of scale up.
