Chapter 7. Controlling Windows III: The ... > Creating/Deleting a New Registry Ent...

7.6. Creating/Deleting a New Registry Entry

Now that I've teased you with the promise of perhaps creating a new Registry entry, let's actually do it — let's put the "hide" entry into ...\LanManServer\Parameters and set it to 0. (No, it won't have any effect, but when it comes to the Registry, I'd much rather not cause you to accidentally make your server stop working. Or, worse, a client's server!) Accomplish that like so:

  1. In Regedit, right-click on the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SYSTEM \CurrentControlSet \Services \LanmanServer \Parameters subkey.

  2. In the context menu that appears, choose New /DWORD (32-bit) Value.

  3. In the right-hand pane, you'll see a new entry with a highlighted name "New Value #1." You should be able to just overtype "New Value #1" with "Hide" (case doesn't matter) and press Enter.

  4. Now give Hide a value. Right-click the new Hide entry and choose "Modify ..."

  5. That raises an "Edit DWORD (32-bit) Value" dialog box like the one we saw back when were modifying the Notepad's Registry values. Note that its current value data is 0, which is what we wanted anyway. Click OK.
