9.3. RAID in Server 2008

Server disks must be faster, more reliable, and larger than their workstation-based cousins. How do you achieve those goals of speed, reliability, and size? Well, you could always purchase faster, more reliable and larger drives but there is another solution. A group of drives can band together and, acting in concert, provide speed, capacity, and fault tolerance. This solution is called Redundant Arrays of Independent Disks or RAID.

Before we cover the last two types of dynamic volumes (Mirroring and RAID-5) let's talk about what RAID is and what it can do for you. RAID is a method of protecting your data by storing the same data on more than one physical disk or storing the instructions to rebuild the data on more than one disk. The function of RAID is to keep your data safe and accessible even in the event of a physical disk failure.
