Appendix A. Interface Changes from Windows Server 2003

At first glance, the interface of Windows Server 2008 appears to be completely different from the one in Windows Server 2003, and in some ways that’s true. The new Server Manager console is a new and complete departure from earlier versions of Windows Server. For one thing, it’s actually useful. But more important, it is the supported method for adding roles and features to Windows Server 2008. By integrating all the management and administration into a single interface, Server Manager changes the immediate look and feel of how Windows Server 2008 is managed. But underneath that major change, many of the underlying management consoles are essentially unchanged. As just one of a whole host of examples, DNS Management is the same. The executable, dnsmgmt.msc, is the same, and the look and feel are the same as they have been since Windows 2000 Server, at least. You can now get to that DNS Manager either as part of the Server Manager console or directly.
