Basic disks can be converted to dynamic disks quickly in the Disk Management snap-in. You will also find, when you attempt to extend a basic disk, that the process also upgrades the disk to a dynamic disk. If you want to build any fault tolerance into your disk arrays using RAID, you will definitely want to convert basic drives to dynamic drives.
To convert a basic disk to a dynamic disk, right-click the disk in the Details pane (on the disk’s designation box, such as Disk 1 or Disk 2). Then select Convert to Dynamic Disk from the shortcut menu that appears. The Convert to Dynamic Disk dialog box opens, as shown in Figure 6.5.
