Summary

In this hour, you learned the basics of the TCP/IP protocol and IPv4 and IPv6 addressing. TCP/IP is the most used LAN protocol in the world. An IPv4 address consists of a 32-bit address in the form of a four-octet dotted-decimal number. IPv6 addresses are 128-bit hexadecimal addresses that are divided into eight 16-bit parts. The last 64 bits of the address refer to the client interface and are used to identify the node on the network.

TCP/IP is installed by default on Windows Server 2008 and you can take advantage of both IPv4 and IPv6 addressing via the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box. TCP/IP (v4 or v6) properties such as the IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, and DNS server address are configured in the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties dialog box (for either v4 or v6).
