6. Storage Management and Clustering > Creating a Storage Space

Creating a Storage Space

You can create a Storage Space from Server Manager using unformatted raw disks. Storage Spaces is installed with the Storage Services feature under the File and Storage Services role. These features and role are installed by default, as part of the “Windows Server with a GUI” install option.

While performing these steps, you can use a simple USB external drive to create the Storage Space. Of course, you could also use USB, SATA, or SAS unformatted, raw drives.

Go into File and Storage Services and create a new volume by clicking “File and Storage Services,” then Disks. Right-click the disk and select New Volume. Click Next and then Next again. The New Volume Wizard will bring the raw disk online and initialize it as a GPT (GUID partition table) disk. Specify the size of the volume in the next screen, and then you can choose to assign the drive to a letter or a folder. For most deployments, leave the default and assign the drive as a letter. Click Next. You can format the drive as ReFS from the File System drop-down menu. Click Next and then Create.
