Summary

Storage Spaces and ReFS are two new storage features in Windows Server 2012 that provide data integrity and fault tolerance. Although ReFS is more reliable than NTFS, Storage Spaces is essentially robust, software-based RAID and may be subject to the same vulnerabilities as third-party software RAID solutions from a hardware perspective. Your decision to implement Storage Spaces depends on the fault-tolerance needs of your organization.

Also, remember that fault tolerance—regardless of whether you configure mirroring or parity—is not a substitute for backup. Even if you deploy Storage Spaces, you still need a good backup strategy for the ultimate protection of your data.

Clustering is an ideal way to ensure high availability of systems in the event of disk corruption or some other failure. Server 2012 makes configuring a failover cluster very easy, removing a lot of the complexity associated with such a configuration. Cluster Shared Volumes allow for integration with SANs and Hyper-V for even more failover and better use of disk space. Finally, Cluster-Aware Updating allows you to keep a cluster in optimum health since you can install critical and recommended software updates without taking a cluster offline.
