8. Networking > IPAM

IPAM

IPAM (Internet protocol address management) is a new tool for managing IP addresses on a network. With IPAM, system administrators can automatically discover IP addresses within the infrastructure, create reports on IP address data, and audit IP address changes.

IPAM is an important new feature because as networks become more virtualized and as cloud deployments increase, IP addresses are assigned to remote and virtual machines (VMs), not just local physical nodes on a network. With physical, virtual, and cloud networks all possible within one infrastructure, managing IP addressing can get a bit messy. IPAM provides a way to centrally keep tabs on both the physical and virtual machines in a network’s IP addressing space. IPAM also integrates with DHCP (Domain Host Configuration Protocol), DNS (Domain Name System), and Active Directory, so it’s an all-encompassing network management utility.
