8. Networking > Quality of Service

Quality of Service

Quality of Service (QoS) is a feature typically associated with networking hardware such as routers. QoS works the same with routers as in Windows Server 2012. It’s used to prioritize traffic; for example, networks that have a VoIP (Voice over IP) solution deployed can set QoS to give bandwidth priority to VoIP traffic, improving the call quality of VoIP communication. Network administrators can use QoS to throttle traffic and measure bandwidth performance.

QoS is not a new feature in Server 2012. With Server 2008 R2, you enable QoS by creating policies. What is new, however, is a set of QoS management capabilities now in Hyper-V. There are two use cases for QoS in Hyper-V. For the corporate network, QoS can help solve performance issues. For businesses that provide hosted cloud services, QoS can help them meet performance requirements as outlined in customer service-level agreements (SLAs).
