8. Networking > Summary

Summary

With new networking features, Windows Server 2012 gives organizations the tools they need for cloud computing deployments. The foundation of cloud computing is virtualization. Many of these new features lend themselves to virtual networking.

One of the most significant new features is IPAM, which helps IT corral IP address management into a centralized console. NIC teaming is a long-awaited feature that lets system administrators pair multiple NICs to provide connectivity failover and bandwidth aggregation.

New Quality of Service (QoS) capabilities allow for traffic shaping and giving bandwidth priority to the most critical applications an organization runs.

Finally, the Hyper-V extensible network switch allows third parties to write extensions to bring even more network management to the Hyper-V infrastructure. Native properties in this virtual switch allow for the same type of configurations in any physical switch. VMs can be placed into PVLANs to isolate VMs and control communications to them. Inherent security mechanisms in the virtual switch also guard against various threats.
