9. Remote Access > BranchCache

BranchCache

Unified Remote Access also provides site-to-site connectivity. Many organizations and businesses have branch offices in different locations. You can configure Windows Server 2012 RRAS and DirectAccess to provide site-to-site VPN. The performance of the connection between sites is largely dependent on the type of WAN connection that exists between branch offices (T1 lines provide a fixed 1.5 Mbps bandwidth, but combining T1s or Ethernet-over-Copper connections give faster speeds).

Yet, even with adequate bandwidth between sites, issues with latency, file syncing, and pokey performance can persist. BranchCache, which debuted with Server 2008 R2, is a feature that attempts to address issues with performance between sites. With BranchCache, data at a main site is cached at the remote site, so that users at the remote site are accessing data locally rather than across the WAN.
